Im sure you've all seen on socials the hazards of air-drying, everything we thought we knew about hair health went out the window. At our Sutherland Shire Hair Salon, we aren't too quick to believe viral hair trends/myths. Lets settle this great hair debate once and for all. Is air-drying your hair actually bad? And if so, how bad? Read on for all the answers.
SO, IS AIR-DRYING YOUR HAIR BAD?
The short answer, no.
Air drying is not bad for your hair, The reason why its not bad for your hair is because you are avoiding direct heat.
But! Because the cuticle is not being closed during the blowdrying process, this may result in frizz and some may not like how their hair looks after it has been air-dried. Air-drying however is the only way to let your unique mane shine as air-drying allows your hair to dry in its natural texture and growth pattern.
Wet hair is definitely more prone to damage and is weakest when its wet. So really, it’s less about air-drying being the issue and more about how you treat it before the hair fully dries. Air-drying your hair actually leaves your hair in a vulnerable state longer, which may allow more opportunities to compromise your hair.
So really, we'd really just say its up to personal preference.
IS BLOW-DRYING ANY BETTER?
The answer to this is also no. To put it simply, blow-drying can sometimes be considered worse because you’re applying heat. Even with a heat protectant, the element of high heat can compromise the hair more than air-drying. Just be careful when styling or brushing wet hair because it is more prone to breakage and damage being in its most fragile state.
So what’s the solution? Balance. Blow-drying your hair gives direct heat, which can lead to long-term thermal straightening, and drying out the hair. Both air-drying and blow-drying hair should be done in moderation.
Blow-drying at a “safe distance,” roughly 15 cm's at a minimum, and using a heat protectant in a constant motion, is potentially better for hair than air-drying. It's a quicker, safer way to get your hair out of its vulnerable state when wet. Our favourite Heat Protectant is the Paul Mitchell Flexible Style Hot Off The Press Thermal Protection Hairspray which can be purchased online via our online store, link to purchase below!
WAYS TO MAINTAIN HAIR HEALTH WHEN AIR-DRYING
If you choose to air-dry your hair, maintain its health with deep conditioning treatments to add moisture to the hair shaft and help you avoid frizz. A favourite of ours is the Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask. We also recommend drying your hair with something like a T-shirt or hair towel to help minimise pulling or ripping on your hair strands as well as using the he Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother leave-in conditioner to seal in moisture.
Because wet hair is more susceptible to damage, it’s best to keep styling simple to avoid breakage.
And finally, don’t go to bed with wet hair! it will be more likely to break.
