Behind nearly every famous blonde is a skilled hair colourist, who tailors their client’s specific shade to suit them – hence why Hollywood hair always looks flawless.

Here are some things to consider before, during and after a big colour change...

YOUR NATURAL HAIR COLOUR MATTERS:

If your hair colour is naturally very dark, your hair stylist may suggest a transition plan for your hair transformation journey. When our Coco21 Caringbah stylists do this, they are considering your hair’s overall health as well as its ability to lift or lighten. As much as we want to get you blonde at our Sutherland Shire Hair Salon, we wont do so at the cost of compromising your hair. At Coco21, the health of your hair is absolutely paramount. While going from darker strands to bright blonde is possible to do in one session, its not always the best decision.

Dramatically changing the colour of your hair can do some major damage to it, particularly if you’re going from dark brown/black to light blonde. Speeding up the lightening process will put your hair at risk of breakage and split ends. Big changes need time and patience.

YOUR HAIR WILL NEED SOME TLC - ITS A COMMITMENT! - CONSIDER THE MAINTENANCE

Excessive bleaching can lead to weaker strands. Give them a pick-me-up by treating your hair to a hydrating hair mask/treatment. These masks can replenish your hair’s moisture and help restore balance to your strands. At Coco21 Sutherland Shire Hair Salon, we stock only the best products including Olaplex, Paul Mitchell, Evo, Seamless1 and Awapuhi Wild Ginger.

Maintaining your blonde strands will require some quality time with your hair colourist. If you’re looking for a smaller commitment on the blonde spectrum, ask your Coco21 hair stylist about balayage or low mainteinance colour. This technique uses darker colours to blend onto your roots, lowlights etc. while keeping the ends bright and blonde. It’s perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of root maintenance, while also keeping their strands beautifully blonde.

YOU WILL NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR HAIR ROUTINE - TONING AND HYDRATION IS ESSENTIAL

Blondes know that just any shampoo won't do. The right purple shampoo is a must for keeping your blonde locks looking shiny and vibrant. Try Olaplex’s No.4P Blonde Enhancing Shampoo to prevent brassy (those unwanted orange/yellow tones) and keep your blonde fresh. This is available at our Sutherland Shire Hair Salon and online via our online haircare shop.

Hair that’s lost its ability to absorb moisture is not especially healthy, and unhealthy hair is impossible to style. Sadly, most of us tend to use a hair straightener to smooth the frizz for a slick finish, making the problem worse. Remember try and avoid/minimise heat, (always use a heat protectant!) our cult favourite is the Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press Thermal Hairspray, and keep hair from going brittle with a daily dose of hydration. Leave-in conditioner is the answer, and super easy to add to your haircare routine, Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother is one of our holy grails!

CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLE AND YOUR BUDGET

Besides working with your personal colourings, letting your Coco21 colourist know a little about your lifestyle (for example, how often you can visit the salon or how you style and wear your hair) will help to determine what shade would work for you.

Consider your budget and be aware that really big colour changes require more upkeep than a subtle one. At our Sutherland Shire Salon, our qualified hair colourists will try to make it as easy as possible for you. Changing your colour dramatically is always going to be higher maintenance. You will need to be prepared to make regular visits to the salon for toners as hair that has been lightened will fade quicker as it is more porous.

You also have to keep on top of the roots, especially if you have bleached your hair or have lightened it all over – every four-six weeks is the commitment level needed to avoid colour bands and patchy colour. If this level of commitment isn’t suited to you, we can opt for a balayage style colour or a more blended root to extend your time in between appointments.

While our experts always use treatments such as Olaplex when doing big colour changes to keep the internal bonds of the hair strong, we also suggest using shampoo and conditioners recommended by your hair colourist at home, given that a brunette shade might have different requirements than that of an ash blonde, for example.

AVOID THE URGE TO DIY

While DIYs are great for crafty home décor, they aren’t so great for brightening your strands. While it may seem like a good idea at the time, no one wants to end up with brassy strands or mismatched highlights. Leave hair colouring to the Coco21 professionals and trust them to take your strands blonder without the DIY mishaps.

As you probably know, the bleaching process strips the colour pigments from your hair. What you may not know is that it forces open the protective outer layer (cuticle) of your hair to expose the middle layer. This middle layer (cortex) is in control of hair colour, strength and texture. When the cortex is exposed all its power goes out the window. Having your hair done by one of our experts, ensures that everything is being done to help protect your hair.

THE TERM ‘BLONDE’ ISN'T UNIVERSAL

When it comes to going blonde, bringing a photo in for reference is always your best bet. While “blonde” may mean icy white strands of a platinum blonde to you, for your stylist it may mean golden blonde tones and a deeper base. If you've had a look on our Sutherland Shire Salons Instagram, you can see all the different kinds of blonde possible to have. Keep everyone on the same page during your next colour appointment by bringing in photos for your Coco21 stylist. Be sure to bring enough visuals to show them exactly what you do and do not want in terms of your hair colour.

YOUR SKIN TONE SHOULD EFFECT YOU'RE COLOUR CHOICE

If you’re unsure about which shade of blonde to choose, try taking your skin tone into account. Typically, those with paler or cooler skin tones look stunning with ashy, pearlescent shades, while those with warmer skin tones simply slay with more golden hues.

YOUR HAIR TEXTURE MAY CHANGE

Over time, bleaching can cause your natural hair texture to change. Those with curls may notice that their ends are straighter as their strands have become drier. On the opposite end, those with naturally straight hair may notice more volume as their hair’s cuticle has been roughened up.

BE HONEST WITH YOUR STYLIST

While it may be hard to admit, your stylist needs to know if you have used at-home hair colour before your in-salon appointment. Knowing just how much your hair has been previously coloured can help your stylist adjust your hair colour formula to get the best result for you. Bleach tells all, we don’t want to get a shock when it comes time to rinse out your foils!
